Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Detour 4 - Germany

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg 4 was Germany...

One of the detours for Germany was to add some German paper dolls to a journal page...

I just had to do this as when I was a child and paper dolls came on the back of the comic Bunty...I used to love them!!

I used water colour to paint a German flag across my pages and then cut out the paper dolls to add to this.

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Detour 1 - China

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg One was China - here is my journal page - you will find more details here

A detour was suggested - to draw a Chinese dragon. I watched Paolo's video here

and here is my attempt:

I daren't leave this on show on it's own so I put it alongside my make I made for
Ike's World Challenges using Ike's image - Dragon Kite

In my stash I also found this rice bowl image and sentiment - rather liked it!!

Only got Germany and a couple of detours now...

Amazing Race Journaling Challenge Leg 5 - India

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg Five is India -  here is my journal page...

Living in India for a while we had experience of the Indian Spring festival 'Holi'.  We saw it celebrated with abandon!

For my journal pages I wanted to use the Indian colours of  'Holi'!
These first layers were a medallian stamp embossed several times in a variety of shimmery embossing powders - the images ended up looking dark red...
I then added texture paste through a stencil around the edges. When dry, I painted this with a selection of distressed inks, smeared on my craft mat and spritzed with water.

I distressed the edges all round with stormy sky.

I stamped a 'Sheena' elephant on a piece of 'wrinkle free distressed' card, cut it out and added grey Promarker around the edges. This was glued in place bottom right.
Above this I added two scallopped squares of shiny paper with a Ganesh and two gems.

We visited Mysore while we were in India and saw the statue of the Demon King. I took a postcard image of this and cut paisley shapes from it (dies from Reverse Confetti). I added these to the left hand side.

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Detour 5 - INDIA

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg Five is India - but I have yet to finish my journal page...

However I did detour...I lived in Mumbai for a year a couple of years ago - I saw this painted elephant in Ahmedabad - so my page has my attempt at sketching it

I bought these wooden fabric stamps in a Mumbai bazaar - they are pretty well worn but I managed to use the elephant and make some reasonable images.

I started the left hand side by adding some pretty special hand made paper - the next image describes it - and I doodled around the edge.

I then added a fabric cut out of a hand - and then I tried to add a sort of henna design...

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Detour 2 - France

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg Two is France and after my journal page I decided to try Cubism!

I had a look at this How To Do a Cubist Style Painting

I used wax crayons...

There was also a detour to make a provencial wall hanging...

Inspired by this I made a fat page...the chipboard was first covered with a DP from my stash.

The rabbit is a Fun Stampers Journey die - cut several times and layered to be as thick as chipboard.

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Leg 3 - Italy

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg Three is ITALY!

I started my Leg Three page by covering it with an Artsy paint and distressing round the edges with tea dye...

I was lucky enough to visit Italy a couple of years ago and travelled to various cities including Florence, Pisa, Bologna and Milan.

I decided to use some of my photos from Milan - printing them out on card and die cutting them into a variety of shapes. I then distressed then around the edges and made a collage.
This is the left hand side...on here I also added black painted chipboard
 to form letters saying MILAN.

This is the right hand side:

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge Leg 2

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg Two is France!

I have been very tempted to join in the detours too but so far time has got away with me...

In fact when I see the fabulous creations of other racers
I wonder if I should really be joining in - I am really a beginner at journalling!

Anyway my Leg Two page started with a baby wipe blended page using three colours of Artsy paints:

It amused me to see that quote on the bottom of the newspaper...

It made me look into French realism...which was a bit of a detour!

My next step was to add scraps of paper to my pages - some with French script on them. I sponged another paint colour around the edges of these. Two triangles of acetate were the two final scraps...I then overstamped with various Tim Holtz 'French' stamps and two French phrases in Stazon. The postage stamps were stamped on a scrap of DP, cut out and glued in place.

Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge

I decided to enter into the Amazing Race Art Journaling Challenge on Facebook

Leg One is China!

Of course I could have chosen many things to put in my journal having lived in Hong Kong for two and a half years (I left 10 years ago) and having visited various places in China at different times.

This is on the Great Wall in 2008:

However I decided to follow the links in the brief and see where that took me...

My double page spread started with a little colour from cleaning a brayer when I had been using is before! But basically I decided to keep my pages monochromatic.
I wanted to just use red as it is such an auspicious colour!
I added Distress ink around all sides using 'fired brick'.

My first idea was to add a stencil to each page still using fired brick.
I used a stamp set (freebie from a magazine) to add Chinese images in black Stazon - this is the left hand side:

On the right hand side I tried some Chinese Brush Painting
having watched this video on Bamboo painting for beginners

I added some red lanterns to this painting with red Stazon and another stamp from the free set.

Thought I would just add this picture of me with a Chinese lantern...

Next I tried my hand at Chinese paper cutting after looking at these tutorials:
Double Happiness
and
 Butterfly
I used thin red paper and attached two of the happiness papers and one butterfly.
